Prince Christian marks new step to becoming king

Prince Christian of Denmark has marked a new step to one day becoming king.

Christian, 18, signed the 'declaration of the constitution' at the Council of State, the same right-of-passage his father Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark participated in at the same age.

The Royal Family has shared a series of photos following the occasion on their official social media channel's including Instagram.

The description, which has been translated from Danish to English, read: "After today's Council of State, where His Royal Highness Prince Christian signed the so-called solemn declaration of wanting to comply with the constitution, the day was immortalised with portraits of the Prince together with Her Majesty the Queen, the Crown Prince Couple and the government."

In the first photo we see Prince Christian standing beside his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, 83, and his proud parents Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.

The second photo shows Christian standing with his family and members of the Council of State.

We also see two throwback photos of the Danish royals, one of Queen Margrethe at her own declaration of the constitution ceremony when she was 18, and then Crown Prince Frederik at his milestone event.

The State Council is the body in the state government where all laws and important government measures are dealt with.

Each heir to the Danish throne takes the oath to abide by the country's constitution upon turning 18.

The pledge means Prince Christian can act as regent if Queen Margrethe is ill or out of the country and his father Crown Prince Frederik is unable to step in.

This week's declaration by Prince Christian also marked the first time that three generations were present in the Council of State at the same time.

Crown Princess Mary was appointed to Denmark's Council of State in 2019, and was pictured alongside her husband and mother-in-law after signing a declaration.

Prince Christian celebrated his 18th birthday on October 15 with a lavish gala dinner hosted by Queen Margrethe at Christiansborg Palace.

Christian is Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary's eldest child. They are also parents to Princess Isabella, 16, and, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 12.
