Prince Charles and Camilla kicked off their royal tour of Jordan and Egypt.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall touched down at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan, on Tuesday for a two-day visit to the country.

The British royals were formally welcomed by the Royal Jordanian Guard along with the British ambassador and a number of other dignitaries, before making their way to Al Husseiniya Palace.

There, they were greeted by an honour guard of Jordanian troops and welcomed by King Abdullah II, his wife, Queen Rania of Jordan, and their son, Crown Prince of Jordan Hussein bin Abdullah.

The couples posed together for photos in front of flags before a bilateral meeting inside between Prince Charles and King Abdullah.

The meeting was understood to have a strong focus on the environment and climate crisis, discussing the conclusions from the recent UN climate conference, COP26, in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Camilla and Her Majesty together visited the Queen Rania Family and Children Centre, which includes a space to help protect children from abuse.

Queen Rania was seen driving the duo to the centre herself, where the Duchess of Cornwall met young local children and teenage girls as they received a "life skills" lesson on building self-esteem and assertiveness.

The Duchess also checked out a range of handmade items in the main courtyard.

The handicrafts celebrate the traditional and contemporary arts of rural and nomadic Jordan, created by female artisans from local communities for the Jordan River Foundation, including items from the JRF's collaboration with IKEA.

Camilla, a champion against domestic violence in the UK, then met with local women employed by JRF, some of whom are survivors of gender-based violence.

Prince Charles and Camilla then came together again for the afternoon's visit to Elijah's Hill.

They were accompanied to the sacred site by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad and Rustom Mkhjian, the King's senior adviser for religious and cultural affairs and the director general of the baptism site.

The couple made their way to the site, walking down the steps to the riverbed where the Bible says Christ was baptised by John the Baptist.

Both Charles and Camilla took turns in touching the water, before the Prince of Wales made his way to a nearby meeting of interfaith leaders.

During the rest of their time in Jordan, the couple will meet with humanitarian organisations, including the UNHCR and the International Rescue Committee, of which the Prince has recently become patron.

The Duchess is set to take part in a Women of the World event and the royal couple will attend a centenary celebration reception "to highlight the depth and breadth of this 100 year relationship and look forward to the next century of relations working together".

While the trip marks their first major tour in many months, it's not the couple's first official overseas visit since the pandemic — with Prince Charles and Camilla making trips to Greece and Germany in the past 18 months.

However, the tour is the first time Prince Charles has visited Jordan since 2015, while the Duchess last visited two years prior, in 2013.
