Prince Charles and Camilla announce first royal tour in nearly two years, visiting Jordan and Egypt

Prince Charles and Camilla will embark on their first royal tour in nearly two years, Clarence House has announced.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will visit Jordan and Egypt from November 16 to 19, representing the Queen and the British government.

It is the first royal tour to take place in 18 months after the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of regular overseas visits.

The announcement comes as Queen Elizabeth is said to be resting at Windsor Castle, "saving her energy" so she can attend the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow next week.

Her Majesty is expected to attend the historic conference with Prince Charles and Camilla and Prince William and Kate, from November 1.

Prince Charles and Camilla will then travel to the Middle East.

The tour will focus on the climate crisis and will explore how leaders can implement commitments following COP26.

In Egypt, Charles and Camilla will attend a reception overlooking the Pyramids at Giza and later visit the ancient city of Alexandria.

Egypt has been nominated for the next summit presidency, with COP27 next year.

Prince Charles will take part in conversations about the value of religious freedom in Jordan and Egypt where there are holy sites for Muslims, Christians and other religions.

The royal couple will visit holy sites in both countries and attend interfaith events that will promote tolerance between different religions.

The importance of girls' education will also be a focus with the Duchess of Cornwall to see the work undertaken by Queen Rania of Jordan to protect vulnerable children and mothers and efforts to keep girls in education.

The couple will meet with craftspeople and conservationists, celebrating traditional crafts and efforts for preserving cultural heritage.

Prince Charles last visited Jordan in February 2015 and Camilla travelled there in 2013. The couple last visited Egypt in 2006.
