It's no secret Princess Diana was devoted to her charity commitments. However new information has revealed that Prince Charles had "banned" Diana from taking part in a royal televised charity event.

In 1987 It's A Royal Knockout was a one-off televised charity special which raised over £1.5m for the Duke of Edinburgh award and Save the Children.

At the time, members of the royal family including Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson all dressed in Elizabethan costumes alongside several celebrities and sporting figures to raise money for the cause.

Despite the show's success, the charity special was deemed "somewhat humiliating" by insiders, who have claimed that Princess Diana wanted to take part in the show, but was not allowed.

In a newly-surfaced interview from 2006, singer Toyah Wilcox – who helped organise the charity event – revealed that Princess Dianna wanted to do it.

"Edward wanted her to do it but Prince Charles banned Diana from doing it."

Comedian Robert Deering who also participated at the time said you could "feel the disapproval" from older members of the Royal Family.

"It was the Royal Family, but not all of them."

"Certain royals were there but the Queen certainly wasn't there. Prince Charles wasn't there."

Meanwhile royal biographer and historian Ben Pimlott claims The Queen thought the entire show was "a terrible mistake."

The author of The Queen claims "there was not a single courtier who did not think it was a mistake."

He added that it "made the public stunningly aware that a sense of decorum was not an automatic quality in the Royal Family."
