Tower of London's Platinum Jubilee Superbloom features a nod to Australia

As the Queen's Platinum Jubilee approaches, parts of London are coming to life in celebration of the historic event – and the Tower of London is no different. 

The home of Her Majesty's Crown Jewels is marking the occasion with a pop of colour of a different kind, with a Superbloom taking place in the moat. (Watch the video above.)

"A Superbloom is a natural phenomena where seeds that lie dormant in the ground suddenly burst into flower when a set of unique circumstances of rain and warmth provide the ideal conditions for them," Project Director Rhiannon Goddard tells 9Honey.

"We thought that would be a great inspiration for us for the Platinum Jubilee, as it's such a unique occasion."

The inspiration for the design was Norman Hartnell's 1953 Coronation gown, which featured a nod to Australia – something that's been replicated in the garden as well in stained glass.

"The dress was designed with lots of embroidery on it, representing all the nations that the Queen was sovereign of, including of course Australia [and] in green, you can see a representation of the Australian wattle done in glass by our fantastic artist Max Jaquard.

"The glass reliefs are designed to stand up above the garden and shimmer in the light and really provide a kind of jewel-like addition to the garden for everyone to enjoy."

Another unique selling point is a four-lane slide to enter the moat for the adventure seekers (plus steps and ramps for those who are not as keen to slide on in). 

There are a range of sculptures in the gardens, framing the famous Tower Bridge behind it and speakers play flowers specially composed music to help them grow.

Over 20 million seeds have been hand planted to bring the Tower of London's moat to life in the first display of its kind.

"This is the first time we've created anything like this in the moat before. Before, we used ceramic poppies or flames, but we've never done anything living," Goddard tells 9Honey. 

"The moat was actually filled with just grass beforehand, it was just a lawn. So creating a new garden in a space like this is really quite hard."

The weather hasn't helped the situation, with a cold and dry April seeing things a touch behind schedule.

"The seedlings are all growing but they're growing a little bit slower than we hoped," Goddard admits. 

"So, although we've got lots of flowers out for this jubilee weekend, the full bloom is probably just a couple of weeks away."

The Superbloom is the first part of an on-going legacy project at the Tower of London, which will see the landscape evolve over the coming years into a permanent garden for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.
