Subtle 'snub' in royal bride's wedding outfit

The biggest royal wedding of the year has just wrapped up, with the friends and family of Princess Anne’s son Mr Peter Phillips and Harriet Phillips (née Sperling) celebrating the new couple in an intimate church ceremony and celebration in the Cotswold countryside.

The bride looked stunning in an Emilia Wickstead design, featuring their signature silhouette in a statuesque column gown. 

The dress featured a square neckline and low back sculpted to the bride’s form. On top was a removable sheer lace bodice featuring a high neckline and transparent sleeves for a refined look. 

Both the gown and train were created from Italian crêpe and French lace, allowing for a more sculptural and linear shape. 

Harriet’s train was held up by her bridesmaids, the bride and groom’s daughters - Miss Savannah Phillips, Miss Isla Phillips and Miss Georgina Sperling, who were also dressed in Emilia Wickstead.

Despite many expecting Harriet, a pediatric nurse, to be welcomed into the royal family while wearing one of her new mother-in-law Princess Anne’s tiaras, it seems that she has had to instead borrow from her jewellers.

The newest royal bride topped off her wedding look with the Pragnell family tiara from the jewellers responsible for her engagement ring and wedding-day earrings. 

The Pragnell family tiara features “diamonds highlight a festoon of glittering laurel leaves and articulated floral motifs,” and is “very rare” in its design, which references both the Edwardian and the Deco periods, according to the jewellers’ website.

It is generally tradition to lend royal brides tiaras from the family’s collection on their big days.

For instance, Catherine, Princess of Wales wore the Cartier Halo Tiara, which was originally commissioned in 1936 by King George VI for his wife, the Queen Mother. Meanwhile, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex wore Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau Tiara, approved and lent by the late Queen Elizabeth.

The piece still has a royal connection, albeit not as strong as a tiara belonging to Princess Anne would.

“Favored as a bridal headpiece and owned by the Pragnell family, this delicate tiara has been worn by generations of Pragnell family members and was present at the coronation of both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II,” the website shared. 

She topped off the look with shoes by Jimmy Choo, and a bridal bouquet by Millie Richardson, featuring sweet peas, myrtle and lily of the valley. 

There was a sense of union with the inclusion of myrtle in the bouquet, with it being a family tradition in both the bride and the royal family, signifying love, beauty, and peace.

Meanwhile, the groom wore a classic morning suit by Dege & Skinner, a historic tailor that have designed his mother, the Princess Royal’s Blues and Royals uniforms and, have been tailoring both his and his father Captain Mark Phillips’ suits for over 50 years.
