Kate and William's touching moment at Order of the Garter event

The Prince and Princess of Wales have shared a touching moment at Order of the Garter, the world's oldest national order of knighthood of which some senior royals are members.

The event began with a royal procession to St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, with the royals arriving on horseback, with Prince William, 40, and Prince Edward, 59, riding side by side.

Princess Catherine and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, were standing and waiting for the procession to arrive when Catherine spotted Prince William and broke into a wide smile.

Royal supporters were quick to point out that the encounter between the couple was similar to the 2014 event when the same exchanged happened.

At this stage the couple had only been married for three years and Prince George was a toddler."

Next to Prince William was Prince Edward, who also exchange a smile with wife Sophie.

Queen Camilla was made a member of the order in 2022 shortly before Queen Elizabeth's death in September 2022.

Princess Anne, who is also a member, joined her family on horseback.

There can only be 24 living members of the Order of the Garter. Those royals who are members wore elaborate vestments and accoutrements for the event including a mantle, hat, collar, garter and robe.

Members of the Order of the Garter are chosen by the sovereign in recognition of a national contribution, for public service, or for personal service to the sovereign.

The Princess of Wales wore a bespoke polka dot dress by Alessandra Rich featuring a high neckline, long sleeves and a cinched-in waist.

She completed the look with a statement Philip Treacy hat and Princess Diana's Collingwood Pearl Drop Earrings.

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, chose a floral A-line dress by Emilia Wickstead adorned with bright, magenta flowers.

She teamed her outfit with a pink Jane Taylor headpiece, a clutch bag and pointed heels.
