Glaring absence in Norwegian Royal Family's 2024 Christmas card

Norway's Royal Family have revealed their 2024 Christmas card – with one glaring absence.

The photo was shared to the official royal Instagram page, with the translated caption: "I wish everyone a very merry Christmas✨".

The photo was taken at the Norwegian Palace's Red Salon with a decorated Christmas tree in the backdrop, peeking out from the corner of the room.

In the image, King Harald V and his wife Queen Sonja are seated on opulent gold chairs in the front.

The queen looked elegant in a red dress while the king suited up with a red tie.

Pictured in the background is Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway, who is the only son of King Harald and Queen Sonja's, and the heir apparent to the throne.

Haakon stood beside his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and their 20-year-old daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

Both Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid opted for long-sleeved print dresses.

But one royal noticeably missing from the annual photograph is their younger son, Prince Sverre Magnus.

Many took to the comments section to point out the prince was missing.

"Why isn't Sverre Magnus in the picture?" one person asked.

The 19-year-old was pictured in the 2023 Christmas card, but his absence in this year's photograph was not explained in the caption.

However, Head of Communications at the Palace, Guri Varpe told Dagbladetone of Norway's largest newspapers, the prince "lives in Trondheim and was therefore not present when the picture was taken".

The 2023 Christmas card also had one key family member not present.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit "couldn't attend due to covid", the palace announced in the photograph caption.

Prince Sverre Magnus is third in line for the throne after his father and sister Ingrid.

December 2023 marked his milestone 18th birthday which was celebrated with his family at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

The royals unveiled a new portrait for the prince's birthday, featuring his parents, sister and grandparents, including his grandmother Marit Tjessem on his mother's side.

Prince Sverre Magnus celebrated his 19th birthday earlier this month on December 3.

In August 2024, the prince joined the rest of the royal family at the wedding of Norway's Princess Martha Louise and Durek Verrett.

He attended in traditional clothes with his rumoured girlfriend, Amalie Givaer MacLeod.

The Norwegian royals are the latest family to release their annual Christmas card.

Princess Anne, King Charles and Queen Camilla, Belgium's royal family and Monaco's royal family have all shared their 2024 Christmas cards over the weeks.
