Meghan will join Queen Elizabeth for a joint outing today

It's a big day for Meghan Markle! The new Duchess will be joining Queen Elizabeth II for a joint royal outing later today.

Our new favourite power couple will travel to Chester for an "away day" from 6pm AEST.

While in Chester, the former actress and the Queen will open a theatre, unveil a bridge, and attend a lunch - you know, just your regular day out with a grandmother-in-law.

The Chester visit will mark Meghan’s first official royal outing without Harry - but truly, who needs a prince by your side when you’ve got the Queen as your date?

And Meghan will enjoy a privilege even her husband Prince Harry is yet to experience: travelling aboard the royal train, according to UK reports.

The pair are probably on the locomotive as we type; despite the journey taking around two hours, the royal train goes at a slower pace, meaning they probably opted for an overnight journey. 

Evidently, it's a very big deal for the newlywed Duchess of Sussex, 36, to be invited onto the nine-carriage locomotive with Her Majesty, 91.

The Sun reports Meghan is the first non-senior family member Her Majesty has invited on board; in other words, she's beaten Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton to the punch.

The two princes are believed to have travelled on the train before, but reportedly not at their grandmother's request.

Described as “Buckingham Palace on wheels”, the sumptuous train was brought into service because Victoria disliked travelling by coach.

Clearly, Meghan is on good terms with her new husband's family, but the Duchess of Sussex isn’t the first new member of the Royal Family to take a solo trip with Queen Elizabeth.

According to The Telegraph, Kate Middleton visited Leicester with Her Majesty nine months after she wed Prince William in April 2011.
 
It seems this latest outing is just the start of Meghan’s busy royal schedule.

"She has been quietly working on a project that will be announced later this year,” Scobie said.
