The nine-year-old son of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's model friend has died suddenly under mysterious circumstances.

Kelly McKee Zajfen, 42, made the tragic announcement on Friday after her son George was found "unresponsive" in their home.

"My world is shattered into a million pieces," the former model wrote on Instagram. "I have little ability to breathe. Walk. Function. Sit. Stand. You were the light of my life."

She added: "Your smile made the room so bright and your heart was the most perfect and sweetest."

"You left this Earth and left behind so many people who loved you. I don't know how I'm able to go on. How I can function. How I can be the light and have joy ever again but I'm going to try. Try hard for your beautiful twin sister."

George left behind a twin sister, Lily, who has a cardiac condition and needs a pacemaker.

Zajfen has been friends with the Duchess of Sussex since the pair met through Meghan's ex-husband Trevor Engelson years earlier, The Sun reports.

Engelson also remains good friends with Zajfen's lawyer husband, Julian, the publication reports.

Meghan and Harry donated $5000 to a crowdfunding page made in George's honour after his sudden death.

The donation was made under the name "Archie & Lilibet" three days ago. Meghan's ex-husband also donated money to the GoFundMe – under the name Tracey and Trevor Engelson.

So far, the GoFundMe has raised over $58,000.

A friend of the Sussexes told the Daily Mail Meghan and Zajfen stayed friends through their shared philanthropy and the community Alliance of Moms.

George's cause of death remains unknown and the family is reportedly awaiting autopsy results.

"I don't even think she (Kelly) knows right now," a source told the publication. "He was just found unresponsive."
