Claims Meghan's 'fury' over her portrayal in The Cut piece forced journalist onto unpaid leave

There is speculation Meghan Markle's public and private complaints about how she was portrayed in her The Cut interview have led the journalist who wrote it to be placed on unpaid leave.

The Duchess of Sussex surprised royal fans when she appeared on the cover of the New York Magazine-owned publication in late August, days before Queen Elizabeth II's death.

The article, written by journalist Allison P. Davis, delved into the former Suits actress' life in Montecito, California and offered thinly-veiled references to Meghan's time as a senior royal.

Now, there are claims Meghan, 41, is unhappy with the article and that her dismay with The Cut has allegedly resulted in the writer being forced into an unpaid hiatus from work.

Just one day after the piece – titled 'Meghan of Montecito' – was published on August 29, Davis tweeted she was going on an "extended" holiday.

"In other news, for the first time in....... ??? .... i'm going on extended vacation, out of pocket, living in the *moment* pray for my tl/inbox/dms etc," she wrote.

Davis' tweet came amongst a negative media frenzy surrounding Meghan's shockingly open interview with The Cut.

One week after it was published, the Queen died and a deluge of anti-Sussex vitriol was directed at Meghan for her poorly-timed return to the spotlight.

It is unknown whether Davis will return to her writing role at the publication. The journalist has not published any pieces with her by-line since the Meghan profile.

Some reports claim she had been "fired" due to Meghan's complaints, while several media Twitter reports have pointed out she was only put on an extended leave of absence.

9Honey has reached out to Davis for comment.

Meghan also took a subtle dig at the story in her latest profile with Variety, claiming the piece was "intended" to be simply about her Spotify podcast, Archetypes.

"The [New York] story was intended to support 'Archetypes' and focus on our projects. I've had some time to reflect on it. Part of me is just really trusting, really open – that's how I move in the world," Meghan told journalist Matt Donnelly.

"I have to remember that I don't ever want to become so jaded that that piece of me goes away. So despite any of those things? Onward. I can survive it."

Speculation has since swirled that journalist Davis faced discipline at work following Meghan's "complaints" about the backlash from the magazine article.

Meghan allegedly aired grievances with the team at The Cut about her profile in the days following the Queen's death, worried her words were now being used against her.

US journalist Brooke Hammerling has since spoken out on Meghan's delicate criticism of how The Cut article was written.

"I have defended Meghan Markle when virtually no one around me will. But it's hard to do when she gives an interview to @Variety saying she was too open and trusting w/ @AllisonPDavis & @TheCut," Hammerling wrote.

"I know the comms people she has worked with. They are the best. She was WELL prepared."

Another thread on Reddit about The Cut piece also claims Meghan blamed Davis for the backlash she received over the article.

"It appears M called and complained and got the writer of The Cut article fired or put on unpaid leave," one speculated.

Since the August 29 publication, Meghan and husband Prince Harry have swapped out their PR team, Sunshine Sachs, for a top Silicon Valley communications team.

From early October, the couple's commercial ventures have been handled 'in-house' at their charitable foundation Archewell, with Christine Weil Schirmer heading up the team.
