An animated television series created by the Duchess of Sussex has reportedly been shelved.

The show, called Pearl, has been "quietly dropped" by streaming giant Netflix due to a big fall in subscribers, Deadline reports.

It was a creation of Meghan and her company with Prince Harry, Archewell Productions.

Though still in the development stage, Pearl was meant to be the company's first animated series and was being produced by David Furnish.

When it was announced in July last year, the duchess said the show would focus on the "heroic adventures" of a 12-year-old girl inspired by a variety of influential women from history.

In a statement Meghan said, "Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life's daily challenges".

The show was announced as part of Harry and Meghan's multi-year deal with Netflix, which was signed in September 2020.

It is among a number of other animations scrapped by Netflix including Dino Daycare from Ada Twist, Scientist executive producer Chris Nee, and the South Asian-inspired adventure Boons and Curses.

Speaking of the project when it was announced Furnish - who is the husband of Elton John - said, "Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex and I are deeply passionate about bringing the inspirational and positive stories of extraordinary women from around the world to a global audience of all ages."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed with Netflix as one of their first financial deals since leaving their places as senior working royals in March, 2020.

They have recently returned from the Netherlands where a film crew was following them for a Netflix series, Heart of Invictus.
