Marie, Princess of Liechtenstein is in hospital after suffering a stroke
Marie, Princess of Leichtenstein was hospitalised following a stroke on Wednesday.
The news was confirmed yesterday in an official statement, which said, "The Princely House regrets to announce that HSH the Princess suffered a stroke yesterday. She is receiving care in the hospital. The Princely Family asks for your understanding that no further information will be given at this time."
Marie, who is aged 81, is the current Princess consort of the German-speaking principality, having married Hans-Adam II, the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein, in 1967.

Princess Marie and Prince Hans-Adam II's son, Alois, is Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein. He has been Liechtenstein's regent since 2004.
Marie and Hans-Adam II have four children together, the first of which is Alois, and 15 grandchildren.
Due to the fact Liechtenstein disallows women from inheriting the throne, Tatjana, Marie and Hans-Adam II's only daughter, is not in the succession line.

A similar practice, called male primogeniture, was in place in the United Kingdom from 1701 — meaning that for hundreds of years, younger male siblings could skip ahead of their older sisters on the path towards the throne.
Queen Elizabeth II, however, passed the Succession of the Crown Act in 2013, which was made official in 2015 — the year Princess Charlotte was born.
It means any child born after October 28, 2011, is no longer bound by male primogeniture, so when Prince Louis was born three years after Charlotte, he was put behind his older sister in the line of succession.

Although she is Princess consort of Liechtenstein, Marie was born in the Czech Republic in 1940.
Marie and Hans-Adam II — who is Marie's second cousin once removed — were married on July 30, 1967, in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, after a two-year-long engagement.
From 1985 to 2015, Princess Marie was the president of the Liechtenstein Red Cross.
