Lady Louise Windsor follows in grandfather Prince Philip's footsteps days after memorial service

Lady Louise Windsor is continuing one of her grandfather's favourite pastimes just days after his memorial.

Prince Philip, 99, died on April 9, 2021, with a memorial in his honour held last week.

Since attending the service, Lady Louise, 18, has been spotted at the British Indoor Carriage Driving Championships.

She also competed in the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Carriage driving was one of the late Duke of Edinburgh's great passions, one shared by his youngest granddaughter.

Speaking to ITV in 2017, Prince Philip said: "I started driving because I'd been playing polo, and I decided I'd give up polo when I was 50."

"I was looking 'round to see what next, I didn't know what there was available. And I suddenly thought, 'Well, we've got horses and carriages, so why don't I have a go?'

"So I borrowed four horses from the stables in London, took them to Norfolk and practiced and thought, 'Why not?'"

Carriage driving isn't a gentle sport, with Prince Philip saying his vehicle had to be rebuilt each year due to damage.

He once turned over in the water, explaining in the ITV interview, "I didn't manage the obstacles very well."

Following his death, Lady Louise inherited her grandfather's dark green four-wheeled carriage and two of his Fell ponies, so she could continue to pursue the activity they both loved.

The carriage was staged at Windsor Castle for his funeral.

Lady Louise, the daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, will begin new royal duties now that she is 18.

She doesn't have a royal title and neither does her brother, James. Their parents explained they wanted to raise their children away from the royal spotlight.

"We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living," the Countess of Wessex told The Sunday Times.

"Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it's highly unlikely."

However, now Prince Harry and Meghan have moved to the US, away from the royal family, it seems more likely Lady Louise will prove useful to the royal family going forward.
