‘Good day to drown a few sorrows’: King sips beer in a pub after England’s World Cup loss

King Charles pulled a pint and made a joke that would resonate with many England football fans after their World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina.

The monarch visited Hall and Woodhouse Badger Brewery in Dorset on Thursday, to mark the start of the independent regional brewer 250th anniversary celebrations.

And the morning after the country’s failed attempt at making the final, His Majesty showed he was keeping his chin up and battling through with humour.

“Maybe it’s a good day to drown a few sorrows,” he said, with a laugh, before taking a sip of the beer he’d just poured.

Queen Camilla standing next to him also had a little laugh and nodded her head.

The King sent a message to captain Harry Kane and his England side via social media moments after their 2-1 defeat to Argentina.

“Commiserations to Harry and the team,” he began.

“While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again.”

Prince William, who is the former president and now royal patron of the Football Association in the UK, also shared a message online after the game.

“Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you,” he wrote in a personally penned post.

“Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high.”

William suggested on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast earlier this month that he’d travel to the US if England made the World Cup final.

It’s not thought the Prince of Wales will be there in person for the bronze final match on Saturday (Sunday AEST).
