King Charles' 'heartrending anguish' for victims of Maui wildfires in letter to US President Joe Biden

King Charles has sent a heartfelt letter to US President Joe Biden amid the devastating Maui wildfires in Hawaii.

The letter addressed to "Mr President", which was also published to the royal family's website, read: "My wife and I were utterly horrified to hear of the catastrophic wildfires currently burning in Maui, Hawai'i.

"We can only begin to imagine the scale of the devastation engulfing the island, and the heartrending anguish of those whose livelihoods have been so disastrously affected," Charles, who is currently on holiday with the rest of the royal family, wrote.

"However inadequate it may be, we both wanted to send our deepest possible sympathy to the families of those who have so tragically lost their lives, and our prayers remain with all those whose loved ones are missing and whose homes have been destroyed.

"As the recovery effort continues, my special thoughts are with the extraordinarily brave emergency responders and Maui residents who are providing their support and assistance.

The King signed the letter "CHARLES R." for Charles Rex, meaning "King" in Latin.

The touching message came as the death toll from the Maui wildfires climbed to 80, with hundreds missing.

The fires were sparked by a dry summer, with strong winds from a passing hurricane causing intensifying the blazes.

On Tuesday a fire hit the town of Lahaina, decimating every building on Front Street, the heart of historic of the ares and the economic hub of Maui.

That included rockstar Mick Fleetwood's restaurant, Fleetwood's on Front St.

He alum shared his heartbreak about losing his restaurant, which has been a mainstay of the business strip since 2012.

"Fleetwood's on Front Street has been lost and while we are heartbroken, our main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members," Fleetwood shared in a statement on X.

"On behalf of myself and my family, I share my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the people of Maui. We are committed to supporting the community and those affected by this disaster in the days and months and years to come."

"Maui and the Lahaina community have been my home for several decades. This is a devastating moment for Maui, and many are suffering unimaginable loss."
