Special meaning behind image used for King Charles and Queen Camilla's 2025 Christmas card

Buckingham Palace has unveiled the image used for King Charles and Queen Camilla's official Christmas card for 2025.

The card, released this morning AEDT, features a photograph taken earlier this year during the royal couple's State Visit to Italy.

"Buckingham Palace is pleased to release the Christmas card that Their Majesties will be sharing this year to celebrate the festive period," it said.

Buckingham Palace said the photo was taken in the grounds of Villa Wolkonsky, Rome, to mark The King and Queen's 20th wedding anniversary in April.

The Queen is wearing a white and beige coat dress by Anna Valentine which she paired with a Lily of the Valley brooch while the King looks dashing in a blue pin-striped suit and grey tie.   

They are both smiling and their arms are linked in the image, which has been reproduced for the Christmas card.

"Wishing you a very happy Christmas and New Year," the card says.

This year marks the King's fourth Christmas as monarch.

The royal couple's first Christmas card as King and Queen in 2022 featured a photo taken at the Braemar Games in Scotland, just a few days before Queen Elizabeth passed away.

The following year's Christmas card used a much more formal image of the royal couple taken on the day of their coronation and featured the King and Queen wearing their robes and crowns in Buckingham Palace's throne room.

The 2024 Christmas card featured a portrait of the happy couple taken in the garden at Buckingham Palace in April that year.

This year's photo was taken by Getty Images' royal photographer Chris Jackson, who is a favourite of the couple.

He was chosen to take the now famous photo to mark Charles' 70th birthday in November 2018, which featured the then Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, with both his children, princes William and Harry, his two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren in the garden of his London home Clarence House.

The photo was released just six months after Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, wed in a lavish ceremony at St George's Chapel, inside Windsor Castle and before they welcomed their son Prince Archie in May 2019.

It is one of the only photos that exists of the family together before King Charles' youngest son and his wife sensationally stepped down from their roles as working royals and fled to Canada and later the US with Prince Archie in tow.

They later welcomed daughter Princess Lilibet, who was born in the US in June 2021.
