Beatrice and Eugenie have attended Catherine's esteemed Christmas event in previous years.

It is understood that the sisters were invited this year but were unable to attend due to other commitments.

"The official line from the palace is saying that they both had commitments and they'd given due notice," royal commentator Russell Meyers told Weekend Today this morning.

"But I'm told perhaps they thought that it wouldn't be a good look necessarily, would have taken the gloss off of Kate and her event tonight. So they did decide to stay away," he added, referring to their father recently losing his titles in light of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

"We can give them their dues for doing that because it is about the Princess of Wales it is about the Princess of Wales. It is about bringing communities together and if they had turned up then surely the story would have been about them coming to the event."
