Why Kate and William are throwing a Christmas party

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge intend to throw a special Christmas party on December 4 in honour of military personnel who are spending the holidays away from family.

Kensington Palace tweeted overnight that Kate and William will spend the festive season supporting deployed military personnel and their families.

Not only does this involve the Christmas party, held in association with the Poppy Legion, but will include a trip to Cyprus the following day to meet with serving officers, families and members of the local community on RAF Akrotiri.

As HELLO reports, an estimated 7500 people serving in the military will spend Christmas away from their family. As parents to three young ones, we're not surprised that this is a cause close to the Cambridge's heart.

Prince William himself has close ties to the military, having served on various short-term secondments and missions with the British air force between 2006 and 2013. His brother Harry spent 10 years serving in the armed forces, which included two tours of Afghanistan.

Amongst all this commotion, it's expected the Duke and Duchess will also release their yearly Christmas card – the first with newest addition Prince Louis.
