King and Queen lead tributes for Princess Catherine's birthday

King Charles and Queen Camilla have lead tributes for the Princess of Wales' 42nd birthdayon January 9.

"Wishing The Princess of Wales a very happy birthday today," the shared on the British royal family's official social media accounts along with a previously unseen photo of the royal for King Charles' coronation.

In the photo Princess Catherine is standing with King Charles, Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh. She is smiling widely as she chats with the King.

It isn't known who is responsible for the royal's birthday cake although she usually bakes them for her children. Getty

Princess Catherine is reportedly marking her birthday with a low-key celebration with husband Prince William and their children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, at their home in Adelaide Cottage, Windsor.

While Catherine bakes her children's birthday cakes each year, it isn't know nwho will be responsible for hers. Though all three children are said to love cake and will be keen to share the treat.

The Middleton family, including Catherine's parents, sister Pippa and brother James, are also expected to pay the royal a visit.

There were reports King Charles would appoint her as a Royal Lady of the Order of the Garter upon her birthday but that is yet to eventuate.

Princess Catherine is considered to be the perfect choice for the prestigious appointment owing to her years of service with the British monarchy.

The title is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain, established by Edward III almost 700 years ago at only the head of the monarchy can appoint it.

Each year in June, Princess Catherine watches the annual Garter Day procession however if she were appointed the a Royal Lady of the Order of the Garter she would participate.

It has been a busy time for Princess Catherine who was named Princess of Wales alongside Prince William who is now styled as the Prince of Wales following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2023 and King Charles ascent to the British throne.

The family also moved from London to Windsor and their children changed schools, with Catherine and William keen to give their children a stable upbringing.

2024 is expected to be a busy year for the Prince and Princess of Wales as they take on additional royal duties.

There are reports the couple will travel to Rome, Italy this year and Princess Catherine is expected to continue her work in early childhood developing in the form of her 'Shaping Us' program.
