That time when the Queen and Kate shared their own, very amusing, joke

The stunning photographs of the Queen and Meghan Markle smiling and laughing together during yesterday's first joint engagement bear a stunning resemblance to when Kate Middleton shared her own joke with the monarch.

The Duchess of Cambridge was seated next to Her Majesty at an event to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, in June, 2012.

Prince William was there too, and it seems he was the source of the day's most memorable moment, which came when Queen was pictured having a laugh with Kate.

The now-iconic photograph shows Her Majesty holding both arms out, in reaction to something which had taken place before her eyes.

The Duchess is looking at Queen Elizabeth, mid-laugh.

The Duke of Cambridge was standing on the field in front of his grandmother and wife. He was meant to fire the starting pistol for a children’s obstacle race during the visit to Vernon Park, in Nottingham. But he was mobbed by the excited crowd when they got onto the track.

William responded by giving a bewildered look to the Queen, but she could only laugh and hold out her hands in resignation.

Once calm had been restored, the Duke joked, "We're ready here, aren't we? No pressure. It was all meant to happen like this".

The monarch looked resplendent in a turquoise and ivory double-breasted coat by Stewart Parvin, and hat by Rachel Trevor-Morgan. While the Duchess wore a blue-grey Missoni coat and hat by the same milliner.

The outing was the first time the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had taken part in a "away day" with the Queen, who had been touring Britain to mark her 60 years on the throne.

William and Kate had married just one year before, at Westminster Abbey.
