Prince Harry's message to British couple who shared significant moment at Invictus Games

Prince Harry has shared a heartfelt message after a British couple became engaged at the Invictus Games in Canada.

James Cairns, a British competitor, proposed to his girlfriend of four years, Hannah Wild, on February 9 after he competed in the wheelchair basketball.

Cairns popped the question while the couple's two-year-old son Arthur was napping.

Harry, 40, later told HELLO!: "At Invictus, we provide a space for healing, outstanding athleticism, and in James and his new fiancée's case, even if you don't leave with a medal, you could leave with a ring!"

Wild said the moment was "a bit of a blur" when she was asked to walk out onto the court where Cairns was waiting to propose.

"It was a yes straight away in my head but I kept thinking, 'What are you doing? Why are you doing this to me in front of all these people?'," she said.

"But it was a proud moment, and it's the best place that James could have done it because it means so much to him."

Cairns spoke of the importance of the Invictus Games for his mental health, saying it has been his "driving force".

"This past year I've lost about seven people who died by suicide after battling PTSD," he said.

"It's been a big toll on me but it was Hannah that pushed me and gave me the driving force to apply for the Invictus Games, and now we're here in Canada."

Prince Harry has been in his element at the Invictus Games which he launched in London back in 2014.

Harry established the event to help support the mental health of injured veterans around the world.

The royal served with the British Army for 10 years from 2005 including tours of Iraq.

The Duke of Sussex has been joined by his wife Meghan at the event which runs from February 8 to 16.

The Duchess of Sussex delivered a speech at the launch of the games, explaining how much the event means to her husband.

"What you won't have seen is all of the moments that have happened in the lead-up to these Games, all of the moments where, as you know, with families, the big rush in the morning – getting ready for school, packing the lunch boxes, making breakfast.

"My husband's in all of that with us, and then he'll be on his phone, and Archie will say, 'Papa, why are you on your phone?' and he's like, 'That's Invictus. I'm getting ready for Invictus.'"

She added that Harry considers the athletes his own family.

"It means so much to him. You are his family just as we are his family. And I hope you recognise how much of his heart he has poured into every single beat that has gotten all of you to this week, that's going to be spectacular," she said.

"I need you to know that, how much it means to him and how much each of you mean to him."
