Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik to leave Denmark for new royal tour days after Queen's surgery

Crown Princess Mary and her husband Crown Prince Frederik are leaving Denmark for a change of scenery.

The royal couple have just announced their first royal tour abroad for the year and it's already shaping up to be an exciting one.

They will depart on Sunday, just days after Queen Margrethe II has major surgery on her back.

Crown Princess Mary, 51, and Crown Prince Frederik, 54, will visit India from Sunday February 26 until Wednesday March 1.

And while they are there, they are due to visit the Taj Mahal – potentially recreating an iconic photo of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, sitting on a bench.

The Crown Prince couple's visit to the mausoleum is expected to be a happier one than Diana's in 1992.

In 2016, the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posed in the same location during their visit to the iconic building.

They will begin the short tour in New Delhi and Chennai before moving to Agra, where they will visit the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.

In a statement from the Danish Royal Household, communications chief Lene Balleby said the visit to India will aim at strengthening relations between the two countries.

But the main focus will be on India's "green transition" with special attention given to water and energy.

"The Danish delegation and Indian government representatives and business leaders will take part in seminars and company visits aimed at promoting export opportunities for Danish companies in the country and strengthening the green strategic partnership between Denmark and India," Balleby said.

The visit follows other recent business and cultural tours around the world.

Last year, the Crown Prince couple embarked on "green business promotional campaigns" in The Netherlands and Vietnam, while Mary travelled to Norway without her husband for a visit focused on sustainable urban development.

They were in Australia in December with their four children but it was for a private holiday. The last official visit by Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik to Australia was in October 2013.

Their trip to India comes at a precarious time for the Danish royal family as Queen Margarethe II has a break from her official duties.

Today, the 82-year-old will have "extensive surgery" on her back after suffering mobility problems for some time.

The surgery will be performed in Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet Hospital where the monarch is expected to remain for at least several days.

"Her Majesty's official program in the near future will be postponed, cancelled or handled by other members of the royal family," the palace said last week.

Those who can act as regent on her behalf include Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, her youngest son Prince Joachim and her sister Princess Benedikte.

Last week, Queen Margrethe spoke about the throne one day passing to Crown Prince Frederik.

"The most important thing is that someone must and can take over," Margrethe said in an interview with Danish newspaper Weekendavisen

"That you are comfortable with the fact that Frederik has to find his way around it. I'm not afraid of that.

"When I let go of the reins, he's there. I am a link in a very long chain that continues, and I believe that he will probably find out."
