Prince Christian was in for a big surprise after celebrating his 18th birthday, with his parents Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik organising something very special once they returned home.

On Sunday October 15 – the actual day of his birthday – Christian had a huge party thrown in his honour by grandmother Queen Margrethe II, at Christiansborg Palace, but it wasn't to be the end of the festivities.

Moments after returning home to Amalienborg from the white-tie gala, Prince Christian found himself at the centre of another party.

His parents had secretly organised a surprise party inside their home, Frederik VIII's Palace, which reportedly saw guests celebrating into the early hours of the following morning.

The surprise party included many of Prince Christian's friends, and some family, who were not able to be included at the more formal gala hosted by the Queen earlier in the evening.

According to Danish media, the guests had gathered in the Knight's Hall of the palace, waiting to yell "surprise" when Prince Christian walked in.

Judging by his expressing, Christian had no idea about the party and was delighted to see so many of his school friends there, reports HER&NU.

The Danish Royal Household did not offer any comment on the party, citing privacy reasons.

Prince Christian's 18th birthday celebrations saw the heir to the throne appear on the balcony of his family home with his parents and siblings and the Queen, in front of thousands of Danes packed into the square below.

Hours later, a lavish banquet was held at Christiansborg Palace which saw four other future monarchs attend: Princess Leonor of Sweden, Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium.

The day was also formally marked with a number of official portraits following royal tradition.

One of the most memorable moments from the day came after a young female guest left a stiletto at the party, promoting the palace to issue a call out for the real-life "Cinderella" to come forward.

"I thought it was a bit funny myself, and I talked to my family and friends about it before, and they agreed that I should do it," Anne-Sofie Tørnsø Olesen, 18, later told Se & Hør.

"It's such a chance you won't get again."
