Prince Harry's uncle Charles Spencer reacts to Meghan Markle miscarriage news

Prince Harry's uncle, Charles Spencer, has sent his well-wishes to his nephew and wife after Meghan Markle revealed she had suffered a miscarriage.

Princess Diana's brother was scheduled to appear on UK morning television show Lorraine to talk about his family's portrayal on The Crown when news broke that the Duchess of Sussex had lost a pregnancy.

Earl Spencer said his thoughts were with the couple today and he couldn't imagine "the agony of losing a child in this way".

"I am sure you will want to join us, all of us here, in wishing all our love to Meghan," host Lorraine Kelly said.

"And of course, to your nephew Harry because today we just found out the news she had a miscarriage. It is just terribly sad, isn't it?"

Earl Spencer replied: "It is, Lorraine. I mean, I cannot imagine the agony of losing a child in this way for any couple.

"It is so sad and I totally agree with you. I am with you, all of my thoughts will be with them today."

The Duchess of Sussex revealed her July miscarriage in a powerful and emotive opinion piece for the New York Times.

She said she was telling her story to shed light on something suffered by many women but still considered to be a taboo.

"Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few. In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage. Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning."
