The warring wives of two famous British soccer players are at risk of an expensive court battle seven months after their explosive social media squabble.

Coleen Rooney captivated the internet in October with her now infamous tweet accusing Rebekah Vardy of selling stories about her to UK tabloids.

As a result of the social media incident, it's understood Vardy, wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has threatened to sue for libel. While Rooney, the wife of former England captain Wayne Rooney, is believed to have indicated she would countersue for breach of privacy.

Now, seven months on, the warring WAGs could settle their spat at the Alternative Dispute Resolution this week in a bid to avoid a costly court case, according to reports.

"They have both been strongly advised to reach an agreement but they're both totally determined to stick to their guns," a source told The Sun.

"Unless they can agree to walk away, the costs are only going to continue climbing."

Rooney earned the nickname 'Wagatha Christie' after setting up a social media trap to find out who was selling her stories to the media.

In a tweet that has attracted tens of thousands of comments, Rooney revealed how she used her private Instagram account to share posts that could only be seen by one person in a bid to figure out who of her followers was using the information to sell stories about her.

Rebekah Vardy

Rebekah Vardy was accused of being the culprit in a now infamous tweet in October, an allegation the WAG denies Getty

"This has been a burden in my life for a few years now and finally I have got to the bottom of it," the mother-of-four said.

Rooney said she shared her private Instagram stories with only one other person to test her suspicions of a leak from her inner circle, and concluded it was Vardy who was selling stories to The Sun.

Rooney hinted at a long investigation to find the alleged mole by planting fake stories on Instagram, all of which appeared in the papers and had "blocked everyone from viewing my Instagram stories except ONE account".

Vardy immediately hit back at the allegations saying she had nothing to "gain from selling stories on you" and "didn't need the money".

The former reality TV star says she has refused to talk to the press and believes her account may have been hacked. Vardy even hired a team of forensic IT experts to clear her name.

"Believe me or I'll see you in court," Vardy warned in one tweet in the days following Rooney's explosive claims.

"Coleen has had enough of Rebekah's outbursts," a source told The Sun, adding: "She is comfortable about the evidence that she has and doesn't want a big legal fight."

Friends allegedly told the publication Rooney is sick of Vardy demanding to see the 'evidence' Rooney claims to have collected against her, refusing to reveal the proof unless required to by lawyers.

Vardy, who was seven months pregnant at the time, was the subject of online trolling and death threats in the days that followed the accusations.

"I ended up with severe anxiety attacks, I ended up in hospital three times. I ended up with kidney stones," Vardy told the Loose Women panel.

"I felt like I couldn't go out with people just looking at me, just questioning whether... 'did she do it? Did she not do it?'"

"It was really, really hard, it is probably up there with one of the worst things that I've had to deal with apart from being abused when I was younger," she recalled.
