Prince William has revealed his beard wasn't well-received by Princess Charlotte when he first tried the look.

The future King revealed the hilarious anecdote in an interview given during his visit to South Africa for the Earthshot Prize this week.

"Well, Charlotte didn't like it the first time. I got floods of tears, the first one I got tears, so I had to shave it off," he said.

Eventually the nine-year-old came around to the idea of her father sporting facial hair.

"Then I grew it back. I thought, hang on a second, and I convinced her it was going to be OK," he said.

One reporter told William the beard gives the impression of a "relaxed" look, which the Prince of Wales found ironic considering how difficult 2024 has been with both his wife Catherine and father King Charles being treated for cancer.

"It's interesting you say that, because I couldn't be less relaxed this year, so it's very interesting you're all seeing that," he responded.

"But it's more a case of just crack on and you've got to keep going."

The Prince of Wales was first spotted with the stubble in an Instagram post congratulating team Great Britain on its performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Then royal fans got a glimpse of the facial hair in person when he returned to duties after his summer break.

The 42-year-old still had his beard when he attended the Homelessness-Reframed exhibit at the Saatchi Gallery in London in early September.

Prince William was last seen clean shaven on July 14 when he and Prince George attended the UEFA European Championship in Germany.

In addition to revelations about his stubble, William has also shared insights into his personal life during his time in South Africa for the Earthshot Prize.
