The surprisingly normal way Prime Minister Anthony Albanese proposed to Jodie Haydon

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has revealed exactly how he asked now-fiancée Jodie Haydon to marry him and it was a surprisingly normal affair.

He shared details during an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Wednesday morning, just days after his Valentine's Day proposal. Listen to the video above.

"In the morning, first she got roses from the Rose Garden. They were fresh, absolutely fresh, and Jody thought, 'That's pretty good, I probably topped out there," he said.

The Prime Minister then took Haydon out to dinner at Italian and Sons, an upscale restaurant in Canberra.

They enjoyed a two-course dinner – appetisers and mains, no dessert – before heading back to the Lodge.

"Jodie said, 'I'll get ready for bed,' and I said, 'hang on, hang on, I've got something,'" Mr Albanese said.

He'd set up a bottle of champagne and glasses on one of the balconies at the Lodge overlooking the gardens, where he sat Haydon down and popped the question.

"I just told her that I want to spend the rest of my life with her and asked her to marry me and she said yes, pretty quick," Mr Albanese said.

"It was a really lovely moment. Then she got a big shock because I'd put the ring in a box below the seat, and she was shocked about my ability to actually, as Prime Minister, go out and secretly get an engagement ring."

Mr Albanese revealed that his security team helped him pull off a secret visit to Cerrone Jewellers in Leichhardt, New South Wales to buy a ring.

The jewellery appointments also didn't appear in his diary, helping the Prime Minister keep it a secret.

When Kyle Sandilands asked if the PM had gotten down on one knee for the proposal Mr Albanese refused to say, quipping that some things had to stay between him and Haydon.

However, Mr Albanese did own up to a little white lie he told Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson on-air a few weeks before proposing.

When they asked if he planned to marry Haydon anytime soon, the PM pushed back hard even though he "completely" knew the proposal was right around the corner.

He told the little white lie in a bid to keep the proposal a surprise, both for the nation and for Haydon.

Though Mr Albanese is now engaged, he's been so busy leading the country that he and Haydon haven't had a chance to start wedding planning.

The one thing Mr Albanese does know is who he won't be inviting to his big day; Nationals backbencher Barnaby Joyce.

Sandilands and Henderson then called Mr Joyce, who took the news with good humour.
