Year 3 maths homework stumps internet

One of the challenges that comes with working from home during the pandemic is that even the kids have to do it.

Although teachers are working harder than ever to stay on top of home-schooling, homework still needs to be done — much to the chagrin of parents.

One slightly frustrated parent has had enough, and has taken to Reddit to express their exasperation with a primary school maths problem — one that even the annals of the internet are struggling to solve.

Posting to the Reddit community Mildly Infuriating, user vtangyl shared an image of a Year 3 maths problem, which has left the community stumped.

"Jared found these baby birds and needs to care for them," the problem begins, showing a cartoon image of what looks like three birds in a nest.

"Each bird eats about four worms a day. In order to feed them all each day, about how many worms will Jared need to find?"

The options for the answer include 6, 10, 4 and 20.

The internet was stumped, with one user pointing out the markings at the bottom of the question, joking, "I'd circle 'OJ' for 'Only Jared knows at this point.'"

Another user insisted that the answer was 20, as "the question refers to there being multiple baby birds so you can rule 4 out, the other 2 options aren't in a multiple of 4."

The problem largely seems to rely on the fact that although three birds feature in the drawing, the question doesn't specify how many birds Jared found.

One user called on their child, who is in the second grade, for assistance.

"We know Jared has to find worms in multiples of 4 so since 20 is the only answer in a multiple of 4 we can also deduce that Jared found 5 baby birds," the user wrote.

"My second grader is smart."

Other users pointed out that aside from not knowing the number of birds Jared found, they also don't know how many days that Jared needs to feed the birds for.

"Am I the only one that thought it was a trick question since they don't specify for how many days?" one user commented.

Regardless, poster vtangyl seemed to have succeeded in their goal of mildly infuriating the internet.
