'Housebound': Peter Dutton's Valentine's Day plans foiled by unfortunate incident

As countless Aussies head out tonight with their loved ones for Valentine's Day, coalition leader Peter Dutton and his wife Kirrily will be staying in.

Despite their best intentions to make the most of the day of love, the couple has had to cancel their dinner plans due to an unfortunate incident that has left Kirrily "housebound".

Speaking to the Today Show this morning, Dutton explained why their date night plans had been foiled.

"We had dinner planned, but she's broken her wrist so she's housebound for a little bit over the weekend," the politician explained.

Co-host Sarah Abo suggested it was the perfect excuse to give her a little extra TLC, and Dutton agreed.

"Bit of extra pampering," he said.

While their dinner plans are off, Dutton explained he had arranged flowers to be delivered to her today as the couple plan to enjoy a more lowkey Valentine's this year.

"Hopefully she's not watching but there'll be some flowers on the way a little bit later on so it'll be a nice day," he said.

During the live cross, Dutton made a point to shout out Kirrily, wishing her a happy Valentine's – but not before making a shout out to co-host Karl Stefanovic.

"Happy Valentine's Day to Karl, but also to Kirrily," he said as Stefanovic laughed.

Abo chimed in, joking that Dutton may end up in the bad books with Kirrily after shouting out before his wife.

"I hope for your sake that she wasn't watching, because Karlos over Kirrily? You might be in a bit of trouble there," she laughed.

As the live cross ended, Stefanovic appeared confused by Abo's comment.

"He chose you before his wife, he gave you a tribute before his wife ... he's in the bad books," Abo quipped.

While this Valentine's Day may be lowkey for the couple, they've had plenty together before.

The pair married in July 2003 and they later had two sons, Harry and Tom. Kirrily also stepped into the role of stepmother to Rebecca, who Dutton shares with his former partner.

For work, Kirrily has reportedly made millions running and owning two childcare centres while also building an expansive property portfolio alongside Dutton.

Dutton first married when he was 22 in 1992 but it lasted just a few months. He later welcomed his daughter Rebecca with another partner in 2002 before meeting Kirrily.

Dutton is the current Leader of the Opposition, holding office as the leader of the Liberal Party since May 2022.
