15,000 kilometres from Paris, 48 athletes from 21 countries are competing in the Olympics from Tahiti.

As romantic as the French city is, the River Seine isn't exactly the right choice for holding the Olympic surfing events.

Instead, these competitors have travelled the distance to ride the infamous Teahupo'o waves and stay in a unique accommodation.

Set up in the quiet Polynesian fishing village, guests enjoy breathtaking scenery and stunning sunsets.

Unlike athletes in France battling cardboard mattresses and food shortages, these lucky competitors are treated to a luxurious cruise ship.

The ship remains anchored offshore, with surfers and their coaches travelling to and from their accommodation via five-minute rides on small boats.

The media have been restricted from accessing the ship. However, on social media, Olympians have shared photos of the first-ever floating athlete village.

There is one thing that the Olympic Village in Tahiti and France have in common: rules.

Even though surfers don't have to observe quiet hours like in Paris, which requires athletes to abide by lower noise levels from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., they aren't immune from all guidelines.

The nation decides on Olympian access to the Tahiti Olympic Village, and that access can be taken away, just like in Paris.

Teams USA, Brazil and Australia have chosen neither accommodation options, instead electing to stay in private villas.

These athletes have shared snaps of private pools, communal dinners and palm tree-lined lawns.
