'Very close to our hearts': Paris breaks unexpected Olympics record with the most proposals ever
The Olympic Games Paris 2024 broke a number of records – and one of the more romantic records, according to officials, was the most proposals ever during an Olympic Games.
Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, confirmed the news to cheers from the crowd at the Paris 2024 closing ceremony at the Stade de France.
In front of a reported 70,000 fans in attendance, Estanguet said the record is ''very close to our hearts".

"With your help, Paris 2024 has smashed many other records. Record audiences, record attendances, record decibel levels," he began.
"And, yes, here in Paris we have broken a new record that is very close to our hearts: the most marriage proposals ever at an Olympic Games.
"These feelings of hope, inspiration and love will remain."

Estanguet, a three-time Olympic champion himself, also thanks fans and volunteers during his speech.
The Paris closing ceremony also featured Tom Cruise abseiling into the stadium to mark the handover of the Paris Olympics to the L.A. Games which will take place in 2028.
There have been at least eight proposals during the event.
One couple who got engaged at the Olympics was Huang Yaqiong and Liu Yuchen, with Yuchen proposing after she won a gold medal in badminton.

"Today I am an Olympic champion, and I got proposed [to], so that's something I didn't expect," she told the Associated Press shortly after.
American shot putter Payton Otterdahl was another athlete who proposed in Paris, underneath the Eiffel Tower to partner Maddy Nilles.

"I love you forever, Maddy Nilles!" one post was captioned.
