Brazilian swimmer sent home from the Olympics, another 'warned' over night out in Paris

One swimmer has been sent home from Paris and a second has received a warning after leaving the Olympic village for a night out without approval from their team.

Brazilian athletes Ana Carolina Vieira and Gabriel Santos reportedly left the village on the night of Friday, July 26 without informing their teammates or team leader, as is required.

They were only found out after posting on their respective social media accounts, at which point the head of Brazil's swimming team reported the infraction to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC).

According to a translated X statement, the BOC decided to take immediate action over the swimmers' "acts of indiscipline".

"In common agreement with the members of the sport's Technical Committee, the Team Chief and the Brazilian Aquatic Sports Confederation (CBDA), the COB decided to punish the two athletes for having left the Olympic Village without authorization during the night last Friday," the BOC said.

Santos received a warning for his behaviour, but Vieira received a more severe sentence after challenging the BOC's decision about the relay team formation on Saturday.

She competed with the Brazilian relay team in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay.

"The athlete Ana Carolina, in a disrespectful and aggressive manner, contested a technical decision made by the Brazilian National Swimming Team committee," the BOC said on X.

The statement continued: "Ana Carolina Vieira was punished with dismissal from the delegation. She will return to Brazil immediately."

Gustavo Otsuka, Brazil's swimming team leader, called Vieira's behaviour "completely inappropriate".

"We're not here playing or taking a vacation ... we're here working for Brazil, for the 200 million taxpayers who are working for us," he said, via Reuters.

"We can't play around here. She took a completely inappropriate position to make her point, her dismay, about the formation of the relay."

Since the news broke, Vieira's Instagram page has been flooded with comments from disappointed Brazilians.

One wrote: "They are there with public money, the minimum required is to respect the rules."

However, fans of Vieira's have also come to her defense.
