Mum slammed for saying her kids won’t be getting Christmas presents

A mum who asked whether she was being cruel “to not want my kids to get any toys for Christmas” has become the subject of an online debate.

The mumsnet user, who goes by the online name “CallMeMaybeee” posted in the forum seeking the advice of others. She wrote: 

“I have two girls, 3 and 1.5. They have lovely bedrooms, nothing fancy or extravagant but I've tried to make them nice places for them to sleep. 

“They don't have millions of toys, I'd say just the right amount. Purely because I clear them out now & again and give the excess to charity. Having recently done a clear out, I just can't see how either of them will benefit from getting more toys.Countless relatives have been in touch asking what to get them and I've said I'll have a think.The truth is, I don't like the idea of their bedrooms and our living room overflowing without toys.

“I know my eldest would be devastated if she doesn't get any toys from santa so I'll no doubt go through the motions. 

“Am I being cruel? I'm also not keen on the idea of spoiling the kids and the already have what I would deem to be a more than sufficient amount.”

While some mums could totally understand her point (“I agree with you op. I really don't like any sort of clutter and tbh how many toys will your children have that they will never use?”), other were shocked that she was considering “cancelling Christmas” for her daughters.

Melissasummerfield wrote: “...please don’t ruin christmas for your children. They don’t believe in the magic of it forever!”

BurberryBlue gave a scathing reply to the suggestion, writing: “One feels sad for your children, poor mites will surely not give a fig about the uncluttered space when they are discussing toys at school. Sounds incredibly selfish on your part.”

Of course, all mums know the struggle of a cluttered home and too many toys to count...so some gave suggestions for other ways to make Christmas special for the girls: 

“A ticket or even a yearly membership to a great farm (with soft plays etc..) is a good gift,” coddiwomple wrote, while Lowdoorinthewal1 added, “...maybe consider Montessori style toy rotation to save your house.”

Have we reached peak Christmas? Some mums clearly think so.
