WATCH: Matildas lose it on stage after Aussie icon's surprise arrival

The Matildas have received the surprise of their lives on stage in Brisbane with an Aussie icon's shock appearance.

Fans flocked to the Riverstage in the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane, to celebrate the team's history-making World Cup run, hours after their third-place play-off loss against Sweden. It was there the Matildas were handed the keys to the city – and were surprised by none other than Nikki Webster.

Webster skipped onto the stage at the end of the event as a special surprise for the team who have been blasting her 2001 hit Strawberry Kisses in the change rooms during the World Cup tournament.

The singer beelined towards defender Steph Catley, who is a massive fan, before breaking out in the team's adopted and unofficial anthem.

Starstruck Matildas whipped out their phones for selfies and danced on stage.

Goalie Mackenzie Arnold said during a press conference that the song choice was originally Catley's doing.

"I don't know where that's come from," Arnold shared before rectifying, "Actually I think it's Steph Catley's favourite song and now we've all jumped on the wagon."

Catley added in another Matildas video that day, "It's a banger of a song, it's iconic.

"I had it as a CD in my Walkman. It was a single and I'd just listen to it over and over again, so it reminds me of my childhood.

"It's happiness in song and it just gets me going on my day - and in the changeroom apparently now."
