Mother-in-law turns up to couple's holiday unannounced: 'I'm lost for words'

There's nothing more awkward than dealing with an uninvited guest, particularly when it is your mother-in-law.

One couple is dealing with this situation right now. The wife explains on Mumsnet that her husband and daughters received a text shortly after arriving at their holiday destination from her mother-in-law, letting her know she and her partner were joining them there — with no warning.

"Have just spent first night with DH [dear husband] and DD's [dear daughters] at our holiday hotel and then got a text this morning from [my mother-in-law] saying she and her partner (who none of us can stand) had booked in," she writes.

"Am furious - has ruined it for me and my 2 DD's who are teenagers are pretty shocked."

Even the woman's husband agrees it is out of order that his mother and partner have turned up unannounced.

She says it has been six hours since they arrived, and the couple "have not contacted them".

"Not sure how this is going to play out at all but not feeling good about it," she continues. "Bit of a shame as we were really looking forward to the break."

The woman ends her post by asking Mumsnet users what they would do.

Commenters have agreed it is strange for her mother-in-law to turn up with her partner with no warning.

"Why would she do such a mad thing?" says one. "Is she waiting for you to contact her?"

"Have they got form for this sort of behaviour?" comments another.

"I can't even begin to imagine - can you go out this evening to avoid them completely? How long are you there?"

Another simply fires the following questions: "How long is the holiday? Why have they gate crashed? Can you go to a different hotel?"

"I'm lost for words," says another commenter. "I can't even fathom why they would do that?!"

One says they should "maintain radio silence" and "keep a low profile", while another person writes, "In future do not tell them where you're going."

"Advise reception to give out no information about your room or issue extra keys!" comments another. "Explain its a family member issue otherwise they might if the surname is the same."
