What Aussies really think of mothers-in-law

There isn't a figure more misunderstood in popular culture than mothers-in-law. Well, maybe step mums. But we'll get to them later.

It seems that for every story about a mother-in-law wearing white to a wedding, coming over to their son's marital home uninvited and cutting their grandchild's hair without permission are a group of women who know their place.

We recently asked nine.com.au readers: "Do you think mothers-in-law get an unjustified bad wrap?".

Fifty per cent of respondents said they "Probably do" (36 per cent) or "Definitely do" (14 per cent) get an unjustified bad wrap.

Just 27 per cent are of the opinion the bad wrap mothers-in-law is justified with 18 per cent saying they "Probably don't" and nine per cent saying they "Definitely don't".

Twenty-three per cent of readers who responded to the survey answered that they are "Unsure".

Clearly there is some work to be done when it comes to sharing stories of incredible mothers-in-law.

I'll start.

Aside from dropping off food and babysitting when needed, my mum is the poster child of brilliant mothers-in-law and she is worshipped and adored in my family.

I have three children and plan to follow in her footsteps in every way.
