'Not meant for the normal human palate': Morgan Riddle's brutal Vegemite verdict one year after Australian Open pledge

In a world of tennis wagers, at least in its uniqueness, one star may have set the gold standard.

This time last year, tennis pro Taylor Fritz's girlfriend Morgan Riddle vowed to eat a jar of Vegemite on Instagram Live if he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Now, she's opening up about the salty saga.

Following her wild pledge, fans were captivated by a mixture of secondhand nausea and Aussie humour as they awaited the results of the match.

Unfortunately for Riddle, and fortunately for Fritz, he proved successful, meaning the bet would have to go ahead.

In a new interview with Adam Peacock at the Australian Open, the model has reflected on the challenge and revealed why she couldn't manage an entire jar.

In her Instagram Live last January, Riddle bravely tried a large spoonful of the spread before disappearing from the frame, audibly retching.

"I learned that you can't eat a whole jar of Vegemite," she told Peacock – the same presenter who confirmed Riddle's Vegemite pledge in an on-court interview with Fritz last year.

"Well, your kidneys will go into failure; it's too much B12 vitamins; I actually Googled that.

As we Aussies know well, Vegemite isn't exactly the average condiment. It is packed with vitamins and has a high salt content.

Despite being a nutritional powerhouse, Riddle's wager involved taking this national treasure to the extreme, as the sticky paste isn't made to be consumed in large spoonfuls.

Riddle admitted she hasn't had any Vegemite since completing her previous and disastrous attempt.

"Everyone in Melbourne, or Australia in general, is like, 'Try it on sourdough with butter and it'll be good' or, 'Try a Vegemite scroll'," she said.

"It's not, like, meant for [the] normal human palate unless you grow up with it."

As the Australian Open made its grand return, fans have been left wondering if Riddle will sign herself up for another challenge.
