Woolworths shoppers 'devastated' as a long-time in-store staple quietly disappears

The daily grind has come to a halt at Woolworths Randwick.

The sudden closure of the in-store cafe has left local shoppers disappointed and stuck with Everyday Rewards points they can no longer redeem for coffee.

The move has prompted a heated discussion on the 'Everyday Rewards' Reddit thread, as fans of the supermarket brew demand answers. 

A local wrote: "I literally went to get a coffee. We live across the road from Woolies Randwick. I had 18 coffees banked. I can't believe this.

"On Mother's Day we went to a local cafe and two coffee and a babycino was $18.90. Woolies was literally the life saver when it came to non-homemade coffee.

"I understand times are hard but like, just increase the $30 reward to $40? Whelp... this sucks."

"It's most likely just that store, I can still see the vouchers in my app so the offer hasn't been withdrawn, you just need to go elsewhere to redeem it," one Woolies shopper commented on Reddit.

The sign reads: "We regret to announce that due to a change in trading conditions, our cafe will be pouring its last coffees on Sunday, May 10th.

"Thank you sincerely for your patronage and support over the years."

It was signed: "The Metro Team."

Several Woolworths locations, particularly Metro stores and selected large-format supermarkets, feature in-store cafes or coffee stations serving barista-made coffee and food.

These include Nelson Bay, North Sydney, Zetland, and Sydney city in New South Wales, and Chirnside Park in Victoria.

Metro stores often provide a free barista-made hot drink when you spend $30 and scan your Everyday Rewards card.

A Woolworths spokesperson has told nine.com.au: "Our Metro stores are designed to provide maximum convenience for customers looking for quick 'grab and go' essentials and top-up shops.

"We have decided to cease the barista-made coffee service due to limited uptake. This will allow our team to adapt our store offering as part of our ongoing commitment to better meet the needs of the local community."

"Customers can still find a wide selection of coffee products in-store, including instant, ground, beans and pods."

While this change appears to impact Woolworth's Metro store in Randwick only, other changes by the supermarket giant are more widespread.

A Woolworths spokesperson this week confirmed the end of their Scan&Go Mobile option, which allowed shoppers to scan their groceries using Scan&Go on their own devices via the Woolworths/Everyday Rewards app.

As of June 8, this feature will be removed from the app.

This doesn't spell the end of Woolworth's Scan&Go grocery shopping option.

Customers will still be able to use Scan&Go via the supermarket's own trolleys and devices provided in stores.

In fact, the number of locations that will host Scan&Go will increase.

That leaves Woolworths shoppers with multiple grocery shopping options including staffed checkouts, self checkouts, and Scan& Go, as well as Direct to boot pick up options and home delivery.

Woolworths is also available via DoorDash.
