Bride reveals the 'ridiculous' $589 wedding cost she never expected and it's sparked a big conversation about hidden expenses

Weddings are known for being expensive but there are some surprising costs that come along during the planning process that can be completely baffling.

One bride in the UK has sparked a discussion about the hidden expenses of saying 'I do' after revealing the "most ridiculous thing" she paid for in a Tiktok video.

Beth kicked off the clip by saying she often gets asked what she wished she knew about planning a wedding before the big day.

"Ummm that putting fairy lights on a pillar is going to cost me £300 ($589) – they're already there! How is it costing me £300? I could put them up for £20 but no, it's a wedding. It's ridiculous," she said.

The conversation erupted in the comment section of the video with people sharing all sorts of bizarre charges, including some who had the same experience with fairy lights.

"We said this EXACT same thing to everyone after we booked our venue. Why is it £300!!!!!" the woman wrote.

But it turns out that price might actually be a bargain because another person revealed an even higher quote.

"You're lucky girls my venue is charging £670 ($1320) for the fairy lights in the barn!!" they said.

However, that's not the highest fair light quote mentioned, with one person revealing they were quoted "£3000" ($5911) while another was quoted "£2000" ($3940).

Other charges that surprised people were the cost of chairs, candles, cutting the cake and guest fees.

"When I was looking at a venue, they were trying to charge £5 ($10) per CHAIR for the ceremony. The chairs were already in the room," one said.

"Our £100pp ($197) day guest price doesn't include any drinks, and we have to pay the same price to feed our suppliers even thought they'll be gone by the time of the night buffet," a bride commented.

"Having to pay the registrar an 'attendance fee' on the day as if we haven't already paid £500 ($985) for them to do the service why am I paying you to show up is that not included," another said.

One person who watched the TikTok recalled a story of friends who got married at Christmas and were going to be charged for Christmas decorations until they asked for them to be removed. The venue then decided to add them as complementary to avoid taking them down.

Many brides reflected on the fact that just mentioning the word wedding seems to make the prices soar.

"Wedding tax" is crazy, book a hotel for a party it's couple £100, say it's a wedding and suddenly it's £10k," one said.

The discussion also included some advice on how to avoid all the extra little charges that add up.

"I would recommend looking at the pricier venues that include everything in the upfront cost. Legit ended up being cheaper for us," one said.

"This is why me and my now husband eloped to Bali instead.. the prices are extortionate over here," another commented.
