To make ends meet during the cost of living crisis we've all had to rethink the way we shop, including looking to stores other than the major supermarkets for household essentials.

For one mum and nurse that shop has turned out to be Bunnings, which she has found much cheaper for cleaning supplies.

Cassandra Davidson revealed in a TikTok video which cleaning products she buys at the hardware store and how much they saved her.

"If you aren't buying cleaning products at Bunnings you are throwing away money... I go and grab the dishwashing tablets, they work out to be 36 cents each, which is a 24 cent savings [compared to Woolworths] or you get 10 more for $8 less," she said.

While Bunnings has had cleaning products for a long time, late last year it expanded its range to include more products, including bulk versions of laundry detergent and dishwashing tablets.

Some shoppers agreed with Davidson that Bunnings is the go-to place for affordable cleaning supplies.

"I've been buying from Bunnings for a few years now and recommend to all my friends. It's by far a money saver and still great products," one said.

"Thanks for the tip! Didn't even realise they sell detergent," another wrote.

Bunnings bosses say the extended range includes over 2000 new products across eight categories including laundry, dishwashing, hand washing and irons.

Others admitted there are cheaper alternatives to the supermarket for cleaning supplies but said there are better deals elsewhere.

"Reject shops for dishwashing tablets," a TikToker commented.

"Dishwashing tablets and washing powder still cheaper at reject shop! I brought 6kg washing powder for $12 last week.," posted one.

"Chemist warehouse is good for cleaning products too! Especially if you're after brands like ecostore, always cheaper than Woolies," a shopper wrote.

Those who do still buy these items at the major supermarkets recommended waiting until they are on sale or buying the store brand for things like dishwashing tablets to save money

For example, at Woolworths at the time of publishing Ultimate Omo laundry liquid 2L or powder 2Kg was on special for half price for $16.

Some shoppers also suggested Aldi as an alternative to Coles and Woolworths for buying cleaning products.

Wherever you choose to shop, looking around for the best deal and exploring supermarket alternatives can both help save some money on grocery costs.
