Sticking to budgets is key when it comes to managing your family's finances, but this is easier said than done when it comes to food and groceries.

Coles and Woolworths have ended their price freezes on groceries and the lure of Aldi's Special Buys section is too tempting for most.

In fact, all supermarkets employ a range of clever tactics designed to entice shoppers to spend more than they'd planned.

This is why some Aussies are taking extreme measures to reduce the cost of feeding their families, including adopting a trend called 'unsupermarketing', which involves purchasing the majority of grocery items at outlets other than traditional supermarkets.

It's also a great way to support local businesses.

Step 1: Find a local butcher

One of the biggest expenses for families is meat, chicken and fish, so start off by looking for a good local butcher and fish market.

Here, you'll easily find the best weekly specials and can build your meal plan around them.

Another way to easily save on groceries is to think of one or two meat-free meals each week – recipes that use up leftover vegetables such as soups and stir fries are best.

Step 2: Find a farmer's market

Farmer's markets are a great way to save on fresh produce, including fruits and vegetables as well as items such as honey and bread.

You can find your closest farmer's market through your council website or on Facebook. Many run fortnightly, so you may need to schedule trips to two of them.

Farmer's markets also often like to clear as much of their stock as possible before closing time, meaning further savings for you.

Step 3: Bulk-buy pantry staples online

There are several websites you can use to stock up on popular pantry staples. Normally they are offered up in bulk, leading to further savings.

These websites include Amazon, Catch and Deals Direct, to name a few.

You'll find noodles, biscuits, rice, pasta and everything else you need to whip up meals for your family. A monthly cycle works best here.

Once you have stocked up at your local butcher, fish market, farmer's market and online, then you can visit your local supermarket, but only if needed – there may be some key ingredients you haven't been able to find.

Keep in mind all the tricks supermarkets use to entice you to spend more than you'd planned by making a list and sticking to it.
