'He had the audacity to write this with a pen': Waiter shocked by customer gripe hand-written on food bill

A waiter has been shocked to find a hand-written note on a meal receipt, explaining why the customers didn't leave a tip.

And their reason seems flimsy.

"He had the audacity to write this with my pen," the waiter shared on Reddit's 'Mildly Infuriating' thread along with a photo of the receipt.

The note reads: "No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks???"

The offended couple had enjoyed meals which totalled $65.80.

It isn't known where this restaurant is located however in the US it is standard practice to tip at least 15 per cent, if not more for good service. Tipping in Australia is less common.

"Looks like he wrote it with the pen gripped in his whole fist," one Reddit observed.

Another speculated: "Chances are they weren't gonna tip anyways and found some lame ass excuse."

Another Redditer observed the note seems based on ego.

"Haha, no we're married, one check is fine." Is that really so hard lol, talk about having an ego," they commented.

Another shared a similar story.

"Just like the post I saw a couple days ago where they wrote 'DON'T call me hun' and didn't tip," they described.

This incident was shared on Reddit four days earlier.

"Tipping culture is weird," another said.

Another Redditer who took particular exception to the incident explained: "This is the kind of thing that's so ridiculous, it's laughable. I can't believe there are even people like that who exist in the same realm as us.

"If they didn't want to tip, they could've just paid the bill and left like every other sane person would've - but noooo, gotta make sure they come up with some sorry excuse, mixed in with an insult, just so that they can sleep soundly at night.

One Redditer proposed the solution: "We should just do away with the whole tipping thing at restaurants like Europe. The restaurants can pay their employees themselves."
