Olympic pole-vaulter Mondo Duplantis and partner Desiré Inglander announce their engagement

After his turn at the Paris Olympic games – which saw him win gold, break his own record and be referred to as the greatest pole vaulter of all time – Mondo Duplantis only had one thing on his mind. And it wasn't his victory.

As the Swedish Olympian flew home from Paris, all he could think about was that now the Olympics were out of the way, he could start planning his proposal to his partner, Desiré Inglander.

"The second after the Olympics was done, I was ready to do it," the 24-year-old told Vogue Scandinavia, who helped him make the special moment even more memorable.

The couple took part in what Inglander, 23, believed was just another editorial shoot, taking place on the beach.

"This is way more nerve-wracking [than competing]," he told the editorial team ahead of the proposal.

The couple wore a number of stylish outfits, but it was at the end of the shoot when the Olympic champion got down on one knee in front of the cameras.

He presented her with an oval-cut diamond on a gold band as the sun set and the waves crashed in the background. Of course, she said yes.

Inglander was in disbelief after the elaborate proposal. "I'm still shocked," she told Vogue, "I'm such a control freak, it's impossible to surprise me."

But Duplantis had one more surprise up his sleeve, having arranged for both their families and their closest friends to travel in from from Stockholm and Louisiana to celebrate their engagement after the shoot wrapped.

The pair had first met in 2020 during a Midsummer party in Stockholm, and though Inglander was hesitant to even go on a date with him, Duplantis told Vogue Scandinavia that he knew from the beginning that he wanted to marry her.

The couple's relationship made headlines during the Olympic games when, after breaking his own world record, Duplantis celebrated the moment by immediately running to his girlfriend.

In a scene that looked straight out of a film, Inglander was waiting in the stands, cheering her boyfriend on when he rushed over to her and gave her a Hollywood-worthy kiss.
