Body on beach thought to be missing pregnant woman

In tragic news, the body of a pregnant woman has been found on a beach in Wellington, New Zealand on Wednesday.

It is believed to be that of missing New Zealand woman Sonam Shelar.

The 26-year-old was last seen at home on Saturday at 8.30am in Khandallah.

Police said while the body is "believed to be" that of Ms Shelar, a formal identification is yet to take place.

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee from Wellington CIB said in a statement, "Police have notified Sonam's next of kin and the matter has been referred to the coroner."

"Police want to hear from any persons who may have seen Sonam Shelar on Friday 16 November or Saturday 17 November 2018.”

Husband Sagar Shelar claimed his wife had gone missing after becoming upset when an ultrasound failed to confirm she was having a boy, saying the experience had left her upset.

Mr Shelar, an Indian national originally from Mumbai, told News Hub his wife dreamed of having a son and their last ultrasound was inconclusive.

"I know that I’m their first suspect, but I know that I haven’t done anything wrong," he said.

Mrs Shelar was last seen at 8.30am on Cashmere Avenue in Khandallah, and was wearing a brown jacket with fur on the hood, as well as white, black and orange trainers. Police are seeking CCTV footage from businesses in the area to help solve the crime.
