The major change Michelle Obama made to the White House

Michelle Obama's upcoming Netflix documentary 'Becoming' will show all the ways in which the former First Lady tried to change the White House for the better, and in particular for the sakes of her daughters Malia and Sasha, who were just 10 and seven when they first moved into the residence for the duration of their father Barrack Obama's presidency which ran from 2009 - 2017.

In the documentary, Michelle, 54, spoke about one change she made early which was to the uniform of the White House butlers who she thought were sending the wrong message to their daughters.

She said she didn't want her daughters "thinking that grown African American men serve them in tuxedos".

She also asked the maid to stop cleaning the girl's rooms as she had an expectation that each of them would make their own beds and keep their rooms tidy themselves.

"I'm not raising a girl who doesn't know how to make their own bed," she said.

The documentary, which is based on her best-selling book of the same name, set to be released on Netflix this week (May 6), with the 90-minute show covering the Obama's time in the White House.

The documentary begins with Michelle talking about her childhood in Chicago's south side and shows her talking about the influence of her family, the work she chose to focus on during her time as First Lady and what she is doing now.

The overwhelming message of the documentary is one of empowerment for women, particularly women of colour.

"We can't wait for the world to be equal to be seen," she says to a group of women in the documentary, telling them "there is much better than what we see".

She says she "craves longer experiences with young people" and the documentary follows her work with youth groups including one at the Philadelphia Community Centre during her 2018 book tour.
