Study reveals the personality traits that indicate men are more likely to cheat

Researchers in Spain have identified 12 personality traits that show men are likely to cheat in relationships.

These so-called "dark personality traits", established in a study by the Universidade da Corunha, have been linked not only to infidelity but other destructive relationship behaviours.

Interestingly, the report found pornography isn't largely responsible for negative relationship behaviours when compared to the personality traits listed.

The traits are:

1. Machiavellianism;

2. Narcissism;

3. Psychopathy;

4. Sadism;

5. Moral justification;

6. Displacement of responsibility;

7. Diffusion of responsibility;

8. Dehumanisation;

9. Attribution of blame;

10. Euphemistic labelling;

11. Distortion of consequences;

12. Advantageous comparison.

The survey was conducted by Universidade da Coruna in Spain and the results published on Universidade da Coruna in Spain via the journal Acta Psychologica. Researchers surveyed 308 people aged between 18 and 25 about their relationships.

Overall, the study found men were more likely to display these negative personality traits, leading researchers to conclude men are more likely to cheat on their partners than women.

"All the dark personality traits, except for narcissism, and all the mechanisms of moral disengagement, except for advantageous comparison, displacement of responsibility, and distortion of consequences, presented significant values as a function of sex, show males scoring consistently higher than females," they state.

When it comes to infidelity specifically, unfaithful partners scored "higher in all the variables of the dark personality traits except for psychopathy, as well as in all the dimensions of moral disengagement".

The study also showed those who have cheated once are more likely to cheat again.
