An awkward exchange between Melania Trump and stepdaughter Ivanka has gone viral, leaving the internet wondering what happened.

In a clip from the last night of the Republican National Convention, the First Lady appeared to respond strangely to Ivanka.

The video shows Melania grinning widely to her stepdaughter as she passes, before quickly dropping her smile and taking on a more neutral expression as soon as Ivanka is out of her direct line of sight.

Ivanka continued to beam as she turned to stand beside her father, President Donald Trump, with Melania remaining at his other side.

The awkward exchange prompted some social media users to wonder if there's tension between the two women, while others insisted Melania's reaction was totally normal.

"Call it a hunch, but I don't think Melania likes Ivanka very much," one Twitter user joked when they shared the video.

Another called Melania's smile "forced", while one simply said: "Yikes!"

But many insisted that Melania's awkward expression after Ivanka walked by was simply her centring herself.

In the clip, Melania appears to refocus on the crowd as soon as Ivanka passes, her expression dropping only for a moment before she begins to smile again.

For someone who has been spending a lot of time in the public eye of late, it can be taxing to always have to be "on", as several fans pointed out.

"Give the First Lady a break," one Twitter user wrote. "She wasn't snubbing Ivanka, that face was just her getting back to business!"

Another said: "It looked like an extremely long night for Melania."

"I think it's unfair to judge a woman's resting b---h face," a third chimed in.

Since President Trump won the 2016 election, Melania has spent plenty of time in front of camera and on the public stage, and viewers have picked up on her expressions.

On several occasions, the First Lady has been spotted dropping a smile to relax into a more neutral expression that some have dubbed a "resting b---h face".

The term, which is usually used in a joking way by women describing their own facial expressions, refers to when someone's neutral expression can appear angry or annoyed.

As several fans pointed out, Melania's reaction to Ivanka in the viral clip doesn't look angry or dismissive — she just looks neutral.
