Talk of a possible future political career for Meghan Markle is gaining traction, with speculation she could go head-to-head with former US President Donald Trump in 2024.

Royal Editor Camilla Tominey has spoken of the possibility on ITV's This Morning.

"Oh my goodness me, I don't even want to imagine a celebrity deathmatch between Trump and Meghan," she said.

"I think I know who'd win actually, and I don't think it's the Donald.

"Wouldn't it be great, just for copy, journalistically, to see them both go head-to-head in 2024? I love that this idea of Meghan as the next President has really ramped up now in the aftermath of the Oprah interview."

Tominey spoke of the Duchess of Sussex's "political ambitions", which she said seeded long before she became a royal.

"It had always been suggested that she had political ambitions," she said.

"2024 might be a little too soon when you consider that she's pregnant with her second child. Also she might have family matters closer to hand.

"But, yes, that is certainly a presidential race I want to watch."

Harry and Meghan spoke out in support of Democratic candidate Joe Biden during the US election he ultimately won.

But it could be another Trump Meghan would find herself up against, with similar political speculation surrounding Ivanka Trump following her time as an advisor during her father's time in office.

Although Ivanka has not yet confirmed anything, she's been rumoured to run in 2022 as a potential Republican challenger to Senator Marco Rubio.

"Ivanka definitely has political ambitions, no question about it," a source told CNN last month. "She wants to run for something, but that still needs to be figured out."

This would, however, require Donald Trump to step aside to make way for his daughter, which, if his recent comments are to be believed, he isn't quite ready to do.

The former president was asked about the possibility of Meghan entering politics on Fox News Primetime with Maria Bartiromo.

"I hope that happens. If that happened, I think I'd have an even stronger feeling toward running," he said.

Trump also told Bartiromo he's "not a fan" of the duchess because of the way she "talks about the royal family and the Queen".

"I happen to think, I know the Queen, as you know," he continued. "I have met with the Queen and I think the Queen is a tremendous person, and I am not a fan of Meghan."
