Body of missing UK student Libby Squire found in estuary

The body of missing university student Libby Squire has been pulled from an estuary in Northern England more than six weeks after she vanished.

Humberside Police said the 21-year-old’s body was discovered near Grimsby docks at the Humber Estuary about 2.30pm Wednesday local time.

The University of Hull student was last seen in the early hours of February 1 after a night out.

Her disappearance rocked the town of Hull and sparked a major police investigation.

"An extensive search was carried out in the days and weeks after her disappearance, with detectives and officers working relentlessly to find Libby,” Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley said today.

"A post-mortem examination commenced this afternoon and is continuing to be carried out this evening, however formal identification has now taken place and we can confirm the body recovered is that of missing woman Libby Squire.”

Police said 24-year-old Pawel Relowicz, who was arrested on suspicion of abduction, remains under investigation.

He is remanded in custody on unrelated charges of burglary, voyeurism, outraging public decency and receiving stolen goods.

Ms Squire, a second-year philosophy and religion student, had been put in a taxi by her friends after she was turned away from Hull’s Welly Cub for being too drunk late on January 31.

But when she got home, she didn’t go inside. Instead, she sat on a nearby bench until the early minutes of February 1.

Police believe CCTV captured the moment she climbed into a car at 12.09am before being driven away. It was the last time she was seen alive.
